Summary

The article focuses on the Europe Agreement entered into between the European Communities and its Member States and the Republic of Estonia. The author analyses the Agreement in the context of balance between the rights and obligations provided by the Agreement.

First, the author provides background information on the Europe Agreement and its specific provisions. Further, the author analyses some of the areas covered by the Agreement such as trade liberalisation and law approximation. The author compares the Agreement with similar agreements entered into by the European Communities with other states. The author mainly focuses on legal aspects although she finds that it is often not possible to separate them from political and economic factors. Thus the author does not deal with all the aspects of relations between Estonia and the European Union but provides a critical analysis of the Agreement from the perspective of balance between rights and obligations.
